What is diabetes?
- Diabetes happens when your body can't move sugar (glucose) from your blood into your cells.
- This makes your blood sugar too high and keeps your body from using it for energy.
Type 1 Diabetes
- The body stops making insulin.
- Insulin helps sugar get into your cells for energy.
- This happens because the immune system attacks the part of the pancreas that makes insulin.
- Without insulin, you need to take insulin injections to stay healthy.
Type 2 Diabetes
- The body doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use it the right way.
- At first, the body makes extra insulin to control blood sugar normal, but over time, it can’t keep up.
- This type is more common in adults but is now happening to younger people too.
